to introduce also monique moyer director of the port. who she began -- became director of the port she noticed how much energy and funds were being focused on the northern waterfront and requested whether or not we could do more in the southern waterfront and i think these projects are an example of how we responded to that challenge, so monique moyer executive director. [applause] >> good morning and thank you. it is wonderful to see so many of our friends and supporters and hard workers here today. how many of you are here at heron's head for the first time? a show of hands. not many. that is terrific news. well welcome back. this is one of the greatest places in the city i am fond of saying. it's visionary. you heard about that from the mayor already and part of it is san francisco moving forward in a way that other cities just don't do. first and foremost other cities do not pass general obligation bonds of this type for a park and none for waterfront parks so we are already ahead of game that way, and we are proud of the generosity of the electoral for supporting that vision. secon
. brad again here and i have been with the port team with this and various people. we have a couple of representatives from at&t here with whom city staff has been negotiating. darren in the front row and artearo smith was here and still maybe here or his jacket is anyway and i have a brief presentation to you. we have been to you in open session describing this project. it's an important transmission project designed to provide reliability of power downtown in the event of a major earthquake. is manny around to start the powerpoint presentation? >> sorry for the short delay. so i will start verbally and the slides can catch up. essentially there are a couple of transmission lines that come up from the peninsula through the po tearo power plant and connect to the embarcadero substation that provide power to downtown. at&t has proposed a new 230kv transmission line to provide redundant transmission line to the embarcadero sub station. at&t and port staff have collectively communicated with the mayor's office, the san francisco public utilities commission and the city administrato

financial district over port property. >> good evening commissioners brad ben son special projects manager elane forbs and i will be (ing this and this is a a port structure financing district and we have been legislationing and sure some time for this and but i wanted to come to the mic first because in 2005 when monique invited me down to the port, we were struggling with the port's capital plan and capital needs we were engaged in a conferring with michael cohen who was then working at the office of economic and workforce development at financing tools that could help us revitalize the water front. and michael cohen mentioned that he was in conversation with david mad way about different option whether redevelopment would be an appropriate tool along the water front or if there was another option and david mad way who's here, is former general counsel of the san francisco redevelopment agency and now works at shepherdmony and point out an object cures area in the california code and so it was really david's idea that we have been plowing over the last eight years and i want to thank mr
, an old friend of mine and a partner who is a planner with the port of san francisco. welcome. thank you for coming along. and jane connors, who is the building manager. she will lead us on a walk through the building as we move along and talk about that as well. this is a fund and a unique place in san francisco, big, open space. a couple of times a week this is filled with a marketplace. >> 100 farmers. they are here on saturday. the farmers market is out front, and also on tuesday's we have about 60 farmers out front. >> and that is on the plaza? >> on saturday it is back here, and on tuesday it is in the front. >> i guess i am interested in what happens. we have a plaza where the ferry boats used to come. what happened? >> the whole backside of the building was originally line for ferryboats. it could handle about 14 boats at one time. the building was built in 1898, and the ferry boats were very popular up until the bay bridge got built in the early 1930's. at that time, the passengers shifted from taking the ferry boats out to going across the bridge and a ferry boat service dimini

nevling who has been doing surveys at the port now for 19 i 19 narrow years and joined us from the department of public works and as you can imagine in the least 15 and-a-half years surveying has evolved from a manual process to a more complex computerized process but nonetheless, it's a very critical function here at the port of san francisco. it effects things like our drudging control, how we measure that, designings and leasing of our properties repair and construction plans, surveys for least boundary and is et cetera. and alan has worked on an amazing number of projects which will live on in perpetuity. and so it's not that easy to be a port surveyor a lot of the project are actually under the piers and require a boat and bounce along regardless of the tied and get precise measurements regardless of the types of installations and it can be apparently very a scary and alan no has not made it into the the port staff that has fallen into the basen and so you they for not joining it it's an very exclusive club. and so easy an amazing person there is no task that is too diff
is and it moved back up here. but in the 1950s, the port was coming out of world war ii, was trying to understand what container station was going to look like, and they commissioned a study that looked at the economic impact of the port to the city. * that sounds familiar, does continue, mr. mayor? and particularly to how the port could participate in the city's tour and commercial industries as well as their cargo industry, and specifically that report found that this area, since we were moving into containerization, were no longer really needed for cargo, that cargo would be better off being in the southern waterfront. and we would have this area devoted to more commercial activities, entertainment, dining, et cetera. and, so, in the early 1950s, the port moved forward and had the franciscan restaurant built. as part of that. and this area we are standing on was an old timber wharf that supported parking for the fisherman's wharf area, of course, all the other restaurants developed over time. * and this old wonderful car ferry slip used to move railcars on and off of the pier over to tiberon a
